  6. This is a demonstration version of the DC DESKTOP GEM desktop enhancement
  7. package from Double Click Software.  Distribution of these demonstration
  8. files is permitted, only if this accompanying text file is included in the
  9. ARC file in its entirety without any alterations.

  16. Welcome to DC DESKTOP!  DC DESKTOP is a series of programs designed to
  17. enhance the GEM desktop.  Included in this DEMO ARC are the files:
  18.  
  19. DC DESKTOP          :       DCDSKTOP.PRG - main program
  20. DC Configurator     :       DCCONFIG.PRG - allows you to configure the
  21.                                 different programs of DC DESKTOP
  22. DC Icon Installer   :       DCINSTAL.PRG - installs desktop icons and allows
  23.                                 for the loading of CABINET and DESKTOP files
  24. DC ICE              :       DCICE.PRG    - DC DESKTOP ICon Editor
  25. DC Show ARC         :       DCSHOARC.PRG - DC desktop 'SHOW' module which
  26.                                 allows viewing/extracting of ARC files
  27. DC Desk Drop        :       DCDSKDRP.PRG - replace the desktop with a
  28.                                 pattern or picture
  29. DC Spooler          :       DCSPOOL.PRG  - DC Desktop printer spooler

  31. Not icluded in this demo, but part of the DC DESKTOP package are:

  33. DC Show Pics        :       DCSHOPIC.PRG - DC desktop 'SHOW' module which
  34.                                 allows viewing of many different picture
  35.                                 formats and image files.
  36. DC Show             :       DCSHOW.PRG   - DC desktop 'SHOW' module which
  37.                                 allows viewing of text files
  38. DC KeyTop           :       DCKEYTOP.ACC - GEM desktop menu entries via
  39.                                 keystrokes
  40. Icon File           :       DCDSKTOP.ICE - DC Desktop icon file - contains
  41.                                 upwards of 75 new icons

  43. Also, included are a bootup selector (SuperBoot), a command line interface
  44. (Gulam), and a fully working demo of QuickST 2.0!

  48. What is DC DESKTOP?
  49. -------------------

  51. "The GEM desktop just got better!"

  53. DC DESKTOP, a new product from Double Click Software, enhances the GEM
  54. desktop like no other program before it.

  56. DC DESKTOP does not replace the GEM desktop like other programs, but adds
  57. features the GEM desktop lacks.  Maintaining 100% compatibility with all
  58. software and not requiring you to learn a new interface.

  62.     * Unique icons for all files and drives (You can import NeoDesk icons!)
  63.     * Install programs and files for execution directly from the desktop.

  73.     * Change the desktop layout (load a DESKTOP.IN?) with the press of a key.
  74.     * Replaces the GEM desktop 'Show' text file routine.  No need to 'Install
  75.       Application' any more, just click on 'Show.'

  111. Setting up the disk
  112. -------------------

  114. To get started, place the files
  115.  
  116. DCDSKTOP.PRG    - must be the first program to run.
  117. DCINSTAL.PRG
  118. DCDSKDRP.PRG
  119. DCSHOARC.PRG
  120. DCSPOOL.PRG

  122. in the AUTO folder.  This demo has been designed to work from a floppy disk,
  123. but will work if you install it on your hard disk.
  124.  
  125. Next, create a directory called DCDSKTOP on your floppy.
  126. Next, create a directory called TRASH on your floppy.
  127.  
  128. Copy the programs DCICE.PRG and DCCONFIG.PRG to the DCDSKTOP directory.

  130. Lastly, copy the file DESKTOP.INF to the root directory.

  137. DC Desktop DEMO has the following configurations built-in to the DEMO:
  138.  
  139. Pressing the CONTROL key while deleting a file(s) will move it to the TRASH.
  140. Icons will not be unloaded when a program is executed (always resident).
  141. (The demo program and demo DC ICE have the icons built-in).
  142. Disk drives will be displayed using the ICON TEXT to match against an icon.
  143. Disk drive letters are not displayed.
  144. Old files in the TRASH will be deleted on a name conflict.
  145.  
  146. F1 calls the file selector
  147. F2 calls the Icon Installer
  148. F3 empties the TRASH
  149. F5 calls DC ICE
  150. F6 calls DC DESK DROP

  156. In order to install an icon onto the desktop you need to call up the
  157. DC Icon Installer.
  158.  
  159. NOTE: DCINSTAL.PRG can also be run from the desktop and does not need to
  160.         be memory resident!

  162. Press F2 and you will be presented with an empty list.  Click on one of the
  163. empty slots and you will be presented with a file selector.  You can choose
  164. either a program or a file.  If you choose a file, then you will be
  165. presented with another file selector asking you to select a program that the
  166. file will be passed to (as a parameter).  For example, you could click on
  167. a .DOC file and then choose a word processor, and the .DOC file will be
  168. passed to the word processor when you 'execute' that file.  This way you can
  169. have document files on the desktop.

  171. You also have the choice of setting up a parameters box before the program
  172. is run, or presenting an exit prompt after the program terminates, but
  173. before it completely returns to the desktop or chains to a file.
  174.  
  175. You can also choose a program or file to chain to.  Click on SET and you
  176. will be presented with a file selector that you can use to choose a program
  177. or file.  If you choose a file/program already installed, it will be used
  178. and any options or chain files it uses will be used, ad infinitum...
  179.  
  180. You can also change the entry (SET PATH) or remove the entry.

  182. In the upper right corner, you will see a blank white box.  Click on the
  183. box and you will be asked to enter a keystroke that can be used to execute
  184. that program from the desktop.

  186. Once you have chosen a program, you will also see the best fit icon that
  187. represents that file.  If you wish to change the icon, or create a new one,
  188. then you can click on the icon and DC ICE will be run.

  190. NOTE: DC ICE can also go into the AUTO folder and run as a resident program.

  192. When DC ICE comes up, it will be ready for editing the best fit icon, and
  193. will display the icon with the text of the installed file.

  195. Click on OKAY if you like this entry.  Click on CANCEL otherwise.

  200. Once back at the main menu, you can also choose to save this desktop out as
  201. one of 11 files.  Click on SAVE DESKTOP to do this.
